A British man whose fiancée recently broke off their engagement is auctioning off her portion of their honeymoon to the Dominican Republic on eBay.

John Whitbread set the starting bid for his ex-fiancee's portion of a two-week all-inclusive vacation in Puerto Plata at just 99 pence. As of Monday morning, the top bid had reached £780 (or about $1,400 CDN).

In photos posted to the auction page, the 32-year-old explained his reasons for selling her portion of the trip. He said his ex-fiancee dumped him just six weeks before their February wedding and the travel company they'd booked their honeymoon with won't refund his money.

"I'm sure now you're wondering why I'm in this position? My ex-fiancee had decided that she doesn't love me anymore," he wrote. "So I can only respect her honesty, I'm not bitter and you just have to move on with life. I've worked hard for this holiday and hate to see money go to waste."

He also cautioned bidders that because he was the "lead name" on the vacation package, he also comes with the deal.

He writes: "I enjoy a good laugh with a good sense of humour. I'm not boring, I'm adventurous, otherwise I wouldn't be doing something as ridiculous as this. I smoke, I drink and damn have I got some sharp moves on that dance floor!"

Whitbread said that while he has no problems going to the Dominican Republic alone, he'd like to give someone the opportunity to join him on this "once in a lifetime opportunity."

In addition to the auction, Whitbread has also recorded a series of YouTube videos in which he gives updates on the auction under the hashtag #girlfromthepublictodominicanrepublic.

Over the weekend he uploaded a video in which he apparently tells his parents for the first time that the engagement has been broken off. After explaining to them his plans for the eBay auction, they give him a hug and encourage him with his new plan.

"Only you could do that," his father says with a laugh.
